Mission Programs

Having come to understand that our Christian faith calls us to action for the betterment of God’s people, GSPC is actively involved in a wide variety of mission endeavors.

Through cash contributions, personal involvement, or cooperative work with other churches, we support mission work on the international, national, and local levels.  GSPC currently is engaged  in supporting the work of the following organizations:

Local Mission

Christmas In April Christmas in April of Charles County.   We support the rehab of substandard housing for those who can least afford to do so. Christmas in April is active nationwide.  For several years we have provided organization and labor to repair homes throughout the Charles County area.  Our youth also have been active participants in this effort.

Charles County Walk to End Homelessness.   GSPC actively participates in this annual awareness event to raise funds to combat the problem of homelessness in our own community.

Health Partners Free ClinicHealth Partners of Charles County.  One of our most recent mission partnerships is with Health Partners, a non-profit clinic dedicated to providing quality medical and dental healthcare to the uninsured and underinsured of Charles County.  Health Partners operates through the generous participation of community healthcare practitioners and a volunteer board of directors.

Health Partners was founded in 1992 through the efforts of Sisters Michaeleen and Gladys Marie of the Sisters of Holy Cross.  To see an excellent video summary of the Health Partners mission, click here.

InterVarsity.  The Purpose of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA is to establish and advance at colleges and universities witnessing communities of students and faculty who follow Jesus as Savior and Lord:  growing in love for God, God's Word, God's people of every ethnicity and culture and God's purposes in the world.  We support the St. Mary's College of Maryland InterVarsity Chapter.

Safe Nights Homeless Shelter Program.   Safe Nights is one of the community support programs managed by LifeStyle of Maryland, described below.  Each winter we participate with other community churches to provide warm overnight lodging and meals for 30-50 homeless men, women, and children during the November-February part of the year.

Southern Maryland Area Food Banks.   We support through donations of food and financial assistance the work of several local churches which operate food pantries to combat chronic hunger in the community. These include Wayside Food Bank in Issue, Joe’s Place in Nanjamoy, and Peace Lutheran Church in Waldorf.

LifeStyles of Maryland Foundation.   LifeStyles is dedicated to issues relative to health, human services and economic growth in the community. LifeStyles acts as an outreach, referral, and service delivery source promoting the dissemination of materials to educate the general public and navigating persons through existing services.  LifeStyles also administers the Safe Nights shelter program for Charles County. GSPC assists with the collection of food items, winter clothing, special Christmas gifts, and as one of the Safe Nights hosts.

National Mission

Habitat for Humanity.   We provide financial support to this non-profit ecumenical Christian housing ministry, seeking to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness in Southern Maryland and throughout the nation.

International Mission

Good Shepherd Hospital, Kasai, Republic of Congo.  We support two full-time missionaries providing a wide range of OB/Gyn, internal medicine, and improved nutritional health at the teaching hospital at the Christian Medical Institute of the Kasai.

Romanian Orphanage ChildrenChildren of the Son Ministries, Oradea Romania.   We provide financial and gift support to this organization.  a wide range of educational, housing, and medical support primarily to poor and orphaned Roma (gypsy) children.  In 2008 eight GSPC members participated in a mission trip to rebuild substandard housing in the Oradea area.  We also have participated in "virtual mission trips" through the financial support of specific construction projects at the Romanian site.

Interserve.  We support Reverends Dwayne and Janet Doyle who are serving in Kyrgyzstan.

In addition many in our congregation are individually involved in other organizations that have special significance to them. In this way we try to live out the Good Samaritan motto “We could have cared less – but we have decided to care more.”
